UETCL LAUNCHES A JUNIOR BOARD

The Board and Management of Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) launched a Junior Board on 26th August 2022 as part of its 5-year Corporate Business Plan (CBP) with the aim of improving efficiency in the Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) by nurturing and retaining young talent.

The Board comprises of eleven members, all below the age of 35 from Engineering, Legal, Human Resources, Accounts, Communication and Information Communication & Technology functions of the company. These members are representative of the eleven departments in the company.

“The Junior Board is one of a kind in the East African Region and as UETCL Board and Management, we are proud to have set a new pace on corporate governance,” said Kwame Ejalu, the UETCL Board chairman. He added that the Junior Board is a training ground for future placement in positions of leadership.

The UETCL Board which was inaugurated in June 2022 noticed the urgent need of an environment that would nurture the growth of young talent in UETCL amid Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development strategies to develop leaders for the future that will see the sustainability of the ESI.

Being composed of young leaders, the MD/CEO will take the lead in mentoring the team. The Ag. MD/CEO, Michael Taremwa further revealed that the Junior Board will be mentored internally by the Board of Directors as well as prominent leaders and coaches who will hone their leadership potential.

Prominent leaders in the private and public sector identified to meet the Junior Board include; on. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa (Minister of Energy and Mineral Development), Hon. Evelyn Anite (Minister of State for Finance, Investment & Privatization), Eng. Irene Batebe (Permanent Secretary MEMD), Eng. Ziria Tibalwa Waako (CEO – Electricity Regulatory Authority), Dr Peter Kimbowa (Board Chairman – NSSF), FCCA Selestino Babungi (CEO – Umeme) to mention but a few.

The UETCL Junior Board is comprised of:

Their terms of reference among many, include; being the company’s innovation hub and think tank, staff champion towards implementation of the CBP and an observer to any social issues that are likely to affect management.

The tenure of the Junior Board shall be for two years, non-renewable. This is part of UETCL’s strategy to grow leaders with diversity in gender and regional balance.
